Reducing Bias in Decision-Making and Grant Awards
Structural bias is rooted in policies and practices that advantage some and disadvantage others. This is echoed in philanthropy, and grantmakers are making a commitment to undo accumulated inequities and drive equity urgently and proactively in their communities. Each step in the traditional grantmaking process is weighted with the opportunity to unwittingly introduce bias - as well as the correlating opportunity to correct for it.
This workshop with PEAK Grantmaking's President and CEO, Satonya Fair, will lead a discussion to help you answer these questions:
- What are we doing that might be systematically putting certain organizations and projects at a disadvantage, without meaning to?
- How can we work proactively to level the playing field, or even improve the chances, for organizations and leaders that have been historically disenfranchised?
Participants will depart knowing some practical ways to reduce bias at each step in the grantmaking process.
This program is for Maryland Philanthropy Network members only.
