How Community Foundations Bring People Together During a Time of Transition

In times of challenge, uncertainty or transition, community foundations can bring people together for a common cause: the community. Community foundations serve as a trusted resource and nonprofit funder so when communities need to unite to support those in need, they can help by stewarding funds, delivering information, bridging diverse groups, addressing crises and critical immediate needs, providing educational programming and recognizing local philanthropy. There are currently over 900 community foundations nationwide with more than 13 in Maryland.

Community foundations such as the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) ensure that grant funds are strategically allocated to address the most pressing community needs. This includes supporting nonprofits that assist people affected by change, particularly those serving marginalized groups disproportionately impacted by transition, and safeguarding the sustainability of critical nonprofit programs. For example, when the head of a household loses their job, they face tough questions about rent, bills, food and child care. Knowing that they can go to local nonprofits for essentials like food, job training and clothing offers relief. Community foundations play a vital role by ensuring these nonprofits fair and reliable funding.

CFAAC ensures that all of its funds are carefully managed to meet immediate needs and long-term goals. We are proud to have renewed our Community Foundations National Standards accreditation, reflecting the highest standards of philanthropic excellence. This rigorous process requires community foundations to thoroughly document their policies on donor services, investments, grantmaking and administration. With this reaccreditation, donors and nonprofits can trust CFAAC to continue stewarding contributions responsibly and effectively for Anne Arundel County.
