Region's income gaps can also lead to perception gap

As interim CEO of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, I often say that we sit in the middle of the racial wealth gap in our region. Our stakeholders are high-net-worth individuals who care deeply about community; and our stakeholders are people in need who care deeply about community.

There’s this interesting symbiotic relationship between the two. One of mutual need, co-dependency, and mystery to some extent. One where we are often the bridge between two worlds that rarely meet. It’s people who recognize that they have more than they need and people who need more than they have. This relationship can be inspiring — and yet those who share and those who receive often make judgments about the other that are not grounded in reality.
