Maryland Philanthropy Network members are invited on an exclusive tour of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) at the University of Maryland Biopark before it opens early next year. The Center will treat approximately 1,900 patients annually with the potential to improve medical outcomes, reduce side effects and promote the understanding of the use of advanced technologies in cancer therapy. The Center will be 12^th proton treatment center in the United States, and the only one in the Baltimore-Washington region.

The visit will begin with an interactive presentation that explains proton therapy, its benefits, and the unique attributes of MPTC led by Dr. William Regine, Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Executive Director of the MPTC. 

We’ll then tour the Center, which will include key areas such as the pediatric waiting room and the gantry/treatment room. We’ll hear about a partnership, funded by the Herbert Bearman Foundation, between the University of Maryland School of Medicine and an Israeli hospital to evaluate Israeli pediatric cancer patients for advanced proton therapy treatment here before incurring the financial and health-related tolls of travel to the United States. Dr. Regine will be with the group during the entire program and available to answer any questions.

There is street parking in front of the building on West Baltimore Street as well as in the UM BioPark Garage One located ½ block away from the center on the corners of West Baltimore and North Poppleton Streets. Please be sure to tell the attendant you are visiting the Maryland Proton Treatment Center.
