Member Sponsored Briefing: University of Maryland Baltimore CURE Scholars Program
Dr. Jay Perman, President of University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), will host a luncheon to brief Maryland Philanthropy Network members on the UMB CURE Scholars Program, an initiative to connect West Baltimore youth with careers in medicine up to and including physicians and researchers.
UMB CURE Scholars identifies promising students in West Baltimore at the middle school level to mentor them through high school and beyond, preparing them for research and health care affiliated career opportunities. It creates a pipeline of STEM/health care experiences utilizing new and existing resources at UMB. The program, now in its 2nd year, currently has 65 grade 6 and 7 middle school students from 3 schools (Franklin Square Elementary Middle School, Green Street Academy, and Southwest Baltimore Charter School) and 120 mentors from UMB. CURE provides mentoring, tutoring, career exploration and scholarships from middle school to graduate school. Funding is provided by the National Cancer Institute CURE (Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences).
