The Abell Foundation has long focused its efforts on alleviating poverty and in recent years has more consciously framed its work in terms of addressing the effects of Baltimore’s historic segregation, disinvestment, and persistent racial discrimination. Like many, it has been prompted by the anniversary of Gray’s death to assess what has changed in the last 10 years.

Each year brings new opportunities for the Baltimore Community Foundation (BCF) to grow its presence and increase its positive impact in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. In 2023, after a period of significant growth at the foundation and after the intensity of the first couple of years of the COVID-19 pandemic had passed, the foundation turned its focus inward to develop and launch Inspire, its new strategic plan.

The Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion is sad­dened to share that Patrice Cromwell, vice pres­i­dent of the Foundation’s Cen­ter for Eco­nom­ic Oppor­tu­ni­ty, passed away on Aug. 27, 2024, after a long ill­ness. Cromwell, who spent near­ly 20 years at the Foun­da­tion, led its invest­ments to improve finan­cial sta­bil­i­ty and edu­ca­tion­al and eco­nom­ic prospects for chil­dren, young peo­ple and families.

This award recognizes the community engagement initiative’s commitment to amplifying the voices and needs of underrepresented communities across the D.C. metropolitan area.
