Innovations in Apprenticeship and Paid Work Experience

Job training programs that include apprenticeships, paid internships or other real life employment experiences are among the most successful in helping prepare jobseekers for new careers. Through paid work-based learning, individuals gain a better understanding of employer cultures, apply newly gained occupational skills and build their resumes while earning wages. Apprenticeships are also good for businesses which gain a pipeline of workers with skills that are customized to their specific workplaces. 

Several new work experience models are being piloted in Baltimore. We will have the opportunity to hear from Mike Posko, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake about HabiCorps, an innovative program to provide a transitional first job to graduates of Baltimore construction training programs and Laura Spada, Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare about a new healthcare apprenticeship program for foreign-trained immigrant healthcare workers. We will also speak with Chris MacLarion, Director of Apprenticeship and Training, Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation about how the State of Maryland is developing and supporting these and other paid work experience strategies through expansion of innovative apprenticeships models.
