Re-Imagining Diverse Schools
60 years after Brown vs the Board of Education, American public schools are more segregated today than in 1968. In the state of Maryland, 9 out of every 10 black Maryland students and 8 out of every 10 Latino students attends a majority-minority school. 1 of every 4 black Maryland students attends a school that is 99-100% minority. Segregating poor, minority children in high poverty schools increases educational inequities.
Schools and school districts throughout the country provide positive outcomes from intentional integration of schools. The Connecticut Open Choice Program resulted in a 320% increase in student enrollment. In Wake County (NC), all schools must have at least 40% low-income students.
Our speakers will share their efforts to create racially and economically diverse schools. Senator Bill Ferguson and Harvard Doctoral Candidate, Sarah Mc Lean, will discuss Next Generation Schools: the creation of 21st Century, diverse school models that incorporate integration and innovation. Karl Alexander, Academy Professor at Johns Hopkins and Director of the Thurgood Marshall Alliance (TMA), will discuss his work to assist Baltimore schools committed to authentic racial and economic diversity in order to help children of all backgrounds thrive academically and socially.
