The Kirwan Commission: An Advocacy Update for 2018
In June 2016, the Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education formed, known as the Kirwan Commission.
The Commission is to review and assess current education financing formulas and accountability measures and how each local school system spends its funds, including the increased State funds provided through the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act. Moreover, the Commission will review the Study on Adequacy of Funding for Education in the State of Maryland, required by the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act. The preliminary policy report is due to be released in the coming week(s).
Advocacy is underway for Maryland's 2018 General Assembly and beyond. Come hear directly from local and statewide organizations to learn about their work focused on the Kirwan Commission and other legislation focused on local, education-related issues.
Our speakers will be:
- Frank Patinella and Bebe Verdery, ACLU of Maryland
- Khalilah Harris, Coalition of Black Leaders in Education
- Sue Fothergill and David Hornbeck, Strong Schools Maryland
This event is for Maryland Philanthropy Network members only.
