Focus on City Schools: Human Capital Conversation

The Human Capital Office leads Baltimore City Schools in attracting, developing, evaluating, engaging, and retaining high-quality leaders for all roles at all levels, ensuring equity, excellence, and opportunity in support of improved student outcomes. 

From City Schools website: "Close to 80 percent of City Schools' students are African American; just over 40 percent of City Schools' teachers identify as African American. And while this percentage is higher than it has been for seven years, issues that stifle development and empowerment of Black teachers are deeply rooted. Honest and critical examinations of systems and beliefs are needed to develop the trust, support, and collegial working environments that will support successful recruiting and retaining of Black teachers". The Human Capital Office is collaborating with teachers and community advocates in a new working group to explore ways to recruit and retain Black teachers, beginning by focusing on the four areas: Increasing teacher retention, encouraging and enabling City Schools students to become teachers, facilitating teacher certification and preparing paraeducators to become teachers.  

Join us for a conversation with Jeremy Grant-Skinner, Chief Human Capital Officer for Baltimore City Schools since August 2017 and a  representative from the Black Teacher Recruitment and Retention Workgroup.  Maryland Philanthropy Network members will learn about goals and outcomes for the department as well as outcomes from the Black Teacher Recruitment and Retention Workgroup.
