At a time when democracy is being challenged, both at home and abroad, finding avenues to support an inclusive and multiracial society has become tantamount.
American democracy is under siege in three key areas:
This article first examines the role of power in traditional private philanthropy before outlining current attempts at reform and discussing the importance of funding advocacy work.
It could not be clearer in those moments how firmly engrained white supremacy is in all the structures of our nation. The response from law enforcement at the Capitol was unrecognizable from the over-policing that occurs in many of the communities we serve and represent. The upswell of white supremacists came from across our country and from nearly every community. We at Maryland Philanthropy Network stand with our colleagues and leaders across the country in calling for change. Our communities and our future depend on it.
Like so many of you, I am still processing the horrifying and deadly January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, while also looking ahead with concern to the week when our country inaugurates a new president and vice president.
